History

Smelek Design is a Golf Course and Landscape Architecture firm based in Houston, Texas. We deliver customized golf course design and landscape architectural services for both the residential and commercial markets. Whether we are designing a golf course community or a luxurious private residential retreat, we are dedicated to the integration of environmentally sustainable solutions for our clients throughout the United States and worldwide.

Though Smelek Design is a young company the founder and senior architect, Michael Smelek, has been in the golf course and landscape architecture business for over 30 years. Michael began his career in 1981 under the tutelage of the late Robert von Hagge.  By 1992, Robert welcomed him as a partner and shortly thereafter the firm of von Hagge, Smelek and Baril was formed with college classmate Richard Baril. Together they designed and restored some of the top rated courses in the world including the #1 and #2 golf courses in Japan, the #1 private course in Houston, Texas, a top rated private course for the state of Texas and one of the Top 10 Affordable Public Golf Courses in America. Their world renowned and award-winning designs have hosted several professional tournament events which include PGA Tour, Senior PGA, JPGA, LPGA and US Open Qualifiers. Michael has been featured in Golf Digest, The Houston Chronicle, Golf Magazine, American Express Travel, Japanese Golf Classic Magazine, and books including “The Architects of Golf” and “Secrets of the Great Golf Course Architects”. Smelek Design has continued the legacy with a recent renovation project garnering a finalist award in an international competition.

At Smelek Design you will find the same dedication and attention to detail present in each and every design we produce. For us, each new contract is not just another project but an opportunity to create a work of art.
