Michael Smelek, ASLA ASGCA

Principal

Since learning to play golf at age eleven, Michael has been fascinated by both the complexity of the game and the diverse beauty of the environment in which it is played. This appreciation for the outdoors and an emerging talent for art led him to pursue a career in Landscape Architecture. Mike Smelek began his career in golf course and landscape architecture in 1980, when he graduated from the University of Idaho with his degree in Landscape Architecture. While attending the University of Idaho, he set a goal of specializing in golf course design and shortly after graduating, was given an opportunity to fulfill this passion. Upon graduating, Mike was immediately hired by Robert von Hagge, where he was able to cultivate his talent under one of the leading architects in the industry. In 1992, Mike was promoted to Senior Partner of the firm and in January of 1995, Mike was given the distinctive honor of being added to the firm’s name von Hagge, Smelek & Baril (vHS&B). Now, after more than three decades and the design of countless golf courses all over the world, Mike continues to utilize his extraordinary talent in all areas of the design and implementation process at vHS&B and with his new solo company, Smelek Design. His meticulous attention to detail as well as diligence in performance and service continues to garner praise from clients all over the world.

Robert “Bobby” Smelek

Senior Associate

Robert was introduced to golf course architecture at a young age, watching and learning from his father, Mike. Robert developed an interest for the profession and soon became fascinated with art and architectural design. At the age of 16 he decided to hone his interest and pursue a career in Landscape Architecture.  He began working as an intern under Robert von Hagge, Rick Baril and Mike Smelek, during the summers, at the firm von Hagge, Smelek & Barli (vHS&B), learning the intricacies of the business and the design process. He continued to pursue this career by attending Texas A&M University where he graduated  Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 2008.  After graduation Robert was hired by vHS&B and continued to develop his skills as a golf course architect. When Smelek Design was formed in 2011 Robert was integral in implementing the residential and commercial design aspect of the firm utilizing his expertise in CAD, 3D modeling and graphic illustrations.
